just asking

Why does food taste sooooo much better when you go out to eat?
Is it because a nice person brings you the food?
The dim lighting? The loud music? Rustic decor?

Or is there another reason?

If you have ever worked in a restaurant, you know that
cooks love to put things into dishes. They think it is their duty.

And if you think about it, you would have to admit:
THAT is why YOUR hamburger does not taste like
the one you get when you go out to eat.
And that is why we LOVE to go out to eat.
So we can better fool ourselves into thinking we are doing good.
Three days later, when the weight shows up, (a lag)
We won't remember all the sugar salt and soy filler and additives we ate.
And won't be able to find the culprit!

I worked on again and off again as a waitress..... *gasp*...
till I was 28.  So I've seen cooks do every many things!
Like adding lots of extra sugar. And vodka. And twice as much cream.
Like anything else. When the inspectors are there, every one follows the recipe.
When they are gone, they make their own recipe. And it's soooooo good!

More butter! More cream!
Twice as much salt as they use on the cooking channel!
Now THAT is alot of salt!

It's not a light breading....... hells no!
It's two freaking inches thick!!

It's not a table spoon full of dressing. That won't do!
How about a half a cup - to start!

Restaurants like to stretch the budget with fillers.
Different butter blends. All kinds of substitues.

Use your head when you go out to eat!
Sorry - couldn't resist!
It's the only way to be sure!
Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk!

  2. Food in restaurants is WAY more full of fat and salt than what I have at home, for sure! And after reading THE END OF OVEREATING, I refuse to ever go to Chili's again. Not that other restaurants don't do the same thing--I'm guessing similar franchise places like Olive Garden, Ruby Tuesdays, etc, do the samething as Chili's--rework and rejigger and enhance and fry and refry and salt up and sugar up foods to make them addictive so you keep coming back for the salt/sugar/carbs/fat fix. :-O

I do ask for special considerations, but I don't food myself. Eating out is always a gamble. And to keep the weight off, mostly eating at home (or finding restaurants that are individual and actually listen to your diet instructions) is key. I love eating out...but I do find I patronize more individually owned and quirky artsy places where stuff is made fresh and not the processed/packaged stuff. If it's breaded and fried in a franchise, it's been fried mroe than once, likely, so you get extra oil and extra salt and extra carbs.

    Yeah..scary.

    Nitey babe...

  3. You are so right. I worked as a waitress too - (hey, who didn't!) I'd come home from my day job, - in a library -- and change clothes and then work for another 6 hours. But the chef liked me and used to give me free food so I didn't complain.

  4. Yep, I worked in a Sizzler. Ditto there. Though I gotta admit, we had good steak, LOL! But we never ate the ones that got dropped on the floor... those were saved for the paying guests!!! :-O

  5. Haha! I'd take off my librarian clothes and put on a miniskirt, and let my hair down, put on more makeup, and go to work!

  6. SOOOO TRUE.
the steaks at Ruths Chris? way better than my lean mean grilledathome types.
took me years before I realized that it was because they were bathed in butter :)

who knew a butter bath was so so good?

  11. I assumed that they were having a free hand with ingredients I limit at home. Sigh. But another reason it tastes better is that I didn't have to make it!

  12. Don't burst my bubble. Especially when we'll probably go out to eat this weekend. ;-)

I reject your reality and insert my own.

  13. Homemade burgers are so much better than what we get out 99% of the time. Most of the time we prefer to eat at home. We like our way of cooking without salt and additives. And smaller servings.
