mct and coconut oil

The happy coconuts seen in here Brazil

Thanks for all the interest in the Coconut Oil !
It's an awesome and intriguing product for sure.

In parts of Brazil, people just climb a tree,
grab a green coconut, chop of the top and drink the juice.
Then eat the coconut! Who is that person?

Coconuts are every where - and they
land on people all the time! Just like on Gilligan's Island.

This is the kind of Coconut Oil I have.
I got mine at Whole Foods, I think.
A jar lasts about a year.
Also available at Netrition! (link)
And no, I don't work for Netrition!

☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃

This is the part I did not understand.... (still don't)
There is only one "Press" in coconut oil
Unlike Olive Oil.... with it's different grades and presses.
The difference comes when there is Virgin coconut oil (about $15 - $20)
And Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized Coconut Oil (about $5 - $7 for the same amount)

It's more expensive, yes, but the other kind is more for cooking
and "other various and sundry tasks."
The expensive kind is more for eating with a spoon.

Unlike virgin coconut oil, refined coconut oil has no coconut taste or aroma.
RBD oil is used for home cooking, commercial food processing,
and cosmetic, industrial, and pharmaceutical purposes.
There are also numerous studies about weight loss and coconut oil.
Even coconut oil fasting!
My only previous experience with coconut oil
was in the form of medical medium chain triglycerides.
Lots of nutritional formulas use them as the fat source.
(who is that?)
Any more info or links are always welcome!
This is a starting point, really!

Merry Christmas, Brazilian style

Hope you are loving this time of year!

  2. Simply put, that shit is great to spread on for a suntan. Please do not eat it !!

    Saturated Fats
Coconut oil contains no trans fats or dietary cholesterol. But it's extremely high in saturated fats, which the American Heart Association names the leading contributor to high blood cholesterol, itself a clear risk factor for heart disease. (see References 1)
    Fad Diets
Single-ingredient diets encourage dieters to binge unhealthily on the latest panacea. Coconut oil is benign enough in moderation as part of a balanced, low-fat diet. But retailers of Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, calling it "one of the most healthy super foods in the world," recommend three tablespoons of the product daily. This alone represents a saturated fat intake of 189% of the FDA recommended daily allowance. (see References 2)
    Bad Science
Claims made about coconut oil exaggerate actual study findings into unfounded conclusions. For instance, some claim that the lauric acid sourced from coconut oil can cure AIDS. But according to the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange, what studies actually show is that monolaurin (a form of lauric acid) attacks herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus and HIV in the test tube environment. No studies of the effects of lauric acid on actual AIDS sufferers have been documented. (see References 3)

  3. I love coconut. I love making red curry thai style with coconut milk. Yummy. Now I want some. But I neither coconut nor tofu in the house. Next grocery trip!

  4. I love coconut oil. I cook with it (it has a very high smoke point), I have it in my tea and coffee, I use it to treat my dry hair, and I use it to moisturise my skin. I go through about one jar of the virgin stuff a month. I have a friend who uses it instead of butter when she bakes cookies, but I don't eat cookies (or bake them) these days!

  5. You are a font of information! I'm intrigued and will be checking into coconut oil for cooking purposes. If you have any other info please feel free to email me if you have time. I would love to learn more. karenogle133@charter.net

  6. I love coconut oil, too. I can eat it straight from the jar and also add it to all sorts of dishes. MCTs rock. For anyone who is interested in learning more coconutresearchcenter.org is a great resource.

  7. I have been using coconut oil on my skin for about 6 months and it has never looked better. Much cheaper than expensive skin care products (and much better!)

  8. Here we go again.
It's Atkins against the Whole Medical World.
Despite the fact that millions of people lose weight,
And stay healthy on Low Carb, Ketogenic Diets.
    Which means higher fat.

Like any other subject, it depends on who you ask,
And where you look and what you believe.
Do your own research - there are plenty of links!

    Coconut Oil as Saturated Fat
Another reason people believe coconut oil must be bad for you is misguided association: it is a saturated fat and "saturated fats are bad for you." Dietary guidelines inevitably fail to distinguish between different kinds of saturated fats and insist that saturated fats (meaning all saturated fats) are harmful.
This is not just misleading. It is bad science. Leading scientists now recognize that just as there is good cholesterol, there are also good saturated fats.
Fats are classified as short-, medium- or long-chain based on the number of carbon molecules they contain. Nearly two-thirds of the saturated fat in coconut oil consists of medium-chain fatty acids.
When we eat long-chain fatty acids, they must be emulsified by bile salts in the small intestine before they can be absorbed into our body. Short- and medium-chain fatty acids, such as those in coconut milk, are absorbed directly through the portal vein to the liver, where they are immediately available to the body.
In other words, most of the saturated fat in coconut oil is easily digestible and converted into quick energy. And these types of fatty acids are less likely to cause obesity because they are immediately used by the body and have no opportunity to be stored.

  9. I guess balance is the key
    some coconut oil
    some olive oil
    butter on special occasions
    moderate amounts of all three
    what's moderate?
    difficult, individual question

    I'm one who can easily
    overindulge in fat
    fat on meats (yum)
    butter on breads, veggies, everything
    (super yum)
    olive oil for cooking (yum)

    maybe I'd better not
    get started on coconut oil
I'd be the one eating it
out of the jar by the spoonful
    arrrrrrg

  10. I lost all my weight by eating sometimes
50 to 70 or more grams of fat a day!
    Just very few carbs!

    LoCarb or Low Fat?
I only know what works for me.

  11. I've used coconut oil for cooking, i love coconut butter! I also love using coconut oil for a skin conditioner :) So many uses for one very simple product.

  12. At least you got varied answers.. That is great.. And look, the obese folks love the product.. Go figure... XXOOO

  13. The "losers" especially loved it!
You should take a survey -
But the "high fat" group is always going to answer "yes!"
You can't convince someone of what they don't want to believe -
    on EITHER side!
    Enjoy your weekend.

  15. Never heard of the stuff while I was gaining weight. Discovered it after I started losing weight. Lost 95 lbs in eight months while eating plenty of coconut oil. Go figure...

  16. Good point!
I got fat by eating tons of Drive Thru, cokes, and candy.
Not from globs of Medium Chain Triglycerides!

The LoCarb camp and the LoFat group
are never going to agree on this issue!
    (That's why the schism, eh?)

It goes back to whatever works for each one of us!
And I really only brag - I mean talk -
about what has worked for me!

I'm a fatty who just happens to be a Nurse.
The medical community - whatever that is -
doesn't endorse LoCarb - per se - but that is changing!

    Living without cake and candy,
and even bread and starches -
is not that much of an alien concept!
Maybe "less carb" or "slow carb" is a good idea,
    whose time has come.

    And about the high fats....
Ketogenic diets are just not for everyone.
Even Atkins said it was not a license
    to gorge yourself on fats!

Love, Peace and Happiness to everyone this Joyful weekend!

  17. Anne,

Do you use it in your coffee to sweeten it? I guess I am still a little unclear as to what to use it for and if it adds a flavor to it or a sweetener? It sounds wonderful but I am extremely uneducated when it comes to this.....

    Thank you

  18. Love coconut oil. Lost 123 lbs so far while eating it. Works for me.

-use it in pan to fry with, has high smoking point so will take the heat
-use it in baking/cooking recipes in place of butter
-use it in smoothies, will keep you feeling full a long time
-use it on your skin for baby's bottom smoothness
-use it as a treat for kitty to lick off your finger (tiny amount per day) for shiny coats
-use it daily for shiny coat for people hair, ha ha ha
-use it to annoy Allan (sorry Allan, that was with a friendly wink)

And no, I don't own stock in a coconut company. I use the same nice Nutriva brand as you, Anne, when I'm going to be "tasting" it or putting it on my skin. But for frying or when I don't care, I use the cheaper de-flavored stuff.

    Good stuff... good discussion.

  19. Thanks Loretta, that gives me a good idea. I have a chow chow dog and use fish oil and really good dog food to ensure her skin does not get dry and to help her coat. I am going to try the coconut oil.

I have ordered mine and will give it a shot and let you know what I think...

  20. And, other Anne
I use it in coffee when I don't use cream!
You CAN eat it by the spoonful, and I sometimes do.
But it kind of makes me gag a little....
Especially if I try to eat too much....
Just an odd texture or feeling.... *yuk*

I also wash my face with it...
I never ever use soap on my face.
And I use it after the shower - all over!

    And yes - Fundamentally, (technically?)
    ONLY animal fats have cholesterol.
And coconut oil is not a trans fat -
(Although any oil can be hydrogenated!)

I love oils, (sounds like Popeye there)
    And love to study them.
I studied Alpha Linolenic Acid for about a year...
And that was before the internet mad it easier!
And one of my fave movies is, of course Lorenzo's Oil!
